Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a key glycerophospholipid in eukaryotic membranes, making up over 50% of membrane lipids. It plays roles in signal transduction and metabolism, and changes in its acyl chain composition have been linked to diseases, likely by altering membrane fluidity. However, this connection is not yet fully understood.
Researchers from the Netherlands studied PC’s role in yeast, a model organism for lipid research. Their findings revealed changes in yeast morphology, gene expression, lipid composition, and membrane fluidity when PC was absent.
