Membranes in living cells are built with hundreds of dynamically regulated lipid species, showing great variations from lipidome to lipidome. It was, however, still not clear how exactly are the lipidomic variations affected by cell-intrinsic and extrinsic factors.
The authors evaluated the lipidomes of a variety of cultured and primary mammalian membrane preparations to find out the sources of variation.
Subsequent analysis revealed the clear separation of lipidomes between cultured and primary cells. Interestingly enough, cultured cell membrane preparations were distinguished by their lack of polyunsaturated lipids.
