Risk scores are used for the evaluation of an individual for a targeted screening. A higher score often denotes a greater chance of developing the condition being checked for.
Screening is of particular importance for diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs),whose prompt detection and potential prevention not only improve the lives of those who are afflicted but also lessen the burden on the public health system.
For this very reason a multi-disciplinary approach is required. In fact, it was found that a more accurate prediction of the potential onset of T2D or CVD was achievable when lipidomic and genetic profiles were combined with clinical indicators such blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Where the terms “lipidomic” and “genomic” refer to, respectively, analyses of the lipid content and genetic background.
