In this study researchers aimed to identify individuals at high risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) before disease onset.
The study used a large population-based cohort and combined genetic data, lipidomics, and clinical diagnostics to develop risk scores for T2D and CVD incidence. It was found that a lipidomics risk score based on the measurement of 184 plasma lipid concentrations could accurately predict T2D and CVD risk, independent of genetic factors. Adding clinical variables improved risk stratification.
The findings suggest that lipidomics can provide a cheap and fast way to identify individuals at high risk for T2D and CVD before disease onset, enabling early interventions and improving disease prevention.
