New publication by (tag authors) reports that the composition of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane influences the process of ER-associated degradation (ERAD) by affecting the extraction of substrates from the membrane.
The study found that an increase in specific very-long-chain ceramides in the ER membrane leads to a higher level of ubiquitinated substrates in the ER membrane and a decrease in extracted substrates in the cytoplasm.
This suggests that ER membrane lipid remodeling can change the activity of ERAD and highlights a previously unknown mechanism in the regulation of ERAD by the lipid composition of cellular membranes.
