This study aimed to identify plasma biomarkers that could serve as prognostic indicators of type 2 diabetes and also provide insight into pancreatic β-cell deregulation and insulin target tissue function.
The researchers analyzed the plasma lipidomes of mice under different nutritional conditions and their pancreatic islet and liver transcriptomes looking for correlations between plasma lipids and tissue gene expression modules.
The results suggest that TAGs may serve as biomarkers of a liver-to-β-cell axis that links hepatic β-oxidation to β-cell functional mass and insulin secretion. The study also identified PITPNC1 as a candidate regulator of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion.
