Myelin is a lipid-rich material that forms a sheath around nerves, including those in the brain and spinal cord. In course of central neurvous system (CNS) diseases like multiple sclerosis or Alzheimer’s disease, myelin gets damaged.
Demyelination disrupts signals between the brain and other parts of the body, negatively effecting vision, cognitive functions, and leading to other symptoms varying from patient to patient.
When CNS get injured, myelin debris is generated from the myelin sheath. The debris consists of myelin membrane fragments, cell fragments, and certain lipids, such as cholesterol, phospholipids, ceramides, and further sphingolipids.
