Microglia play a key role in inflammation after a stroke. This post-stroke inflammation influences neurological recovery. In aging brains, lipid droplet (LD) buildup in microglia leads to a dysfunctional, pro-inflammatory state, worsening neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases.
Scientists studied the role of LD-rich microglia (LDRM) in stroke using in vitro and in vivo stroke models. They examined LD accumulation in microglia and the related inflammatory responses.
It turns out that lipid profiles and microglial behavior vary across different brain regions after stroke. Microglia exposed to stroke or hypoxia show increased LD buildup and higher perilipin 2 expression.
