Extended synaptotagmin (E-Syt) is known to regulate membrane contact site structure as well as lipid transfer function. These evolutionarily conserved proteins are calcium-activated lipid transfer proteins operating at the junctions between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and plasma membrane (PM).
However, the specific roles of E-Syt family members in organizing PM lipids are not fully understood. Among these, yeast tricalbin (Tcb) proteins are crucial for maintaining PM integrity during heat stress.
Researchers suggest that regulating phospholipids is a fundamental function of E-Syt family members necessary for PM integrity.
