Brown adipose tissue is involved in metabolic rate, fat storage, and obesity-related pathologies. To better understand the exact role of different types of adipose tissue (brown, gonadal, inguinal subcutaneous) it is essential to be able to measure it properly.
However, the quantification of the adipose tissue lipidome by shotgun lipidomics is particularly challenging due to the predominance of triacylglycerides.
By developing and utilizing a specific shotgun lipidomics method for the analysis of adipose tissue by Lipotype the authors detected tissue-specific and diet-related differences in three types of adipose tissue from lean and obese mice. Interestingly, brown adipose tissue responded to a high-fat diet by altering its lipid composition, which shifted towards the profile of white adipose tissue.
