Cholesterol in the blood plasma exists in two forms: free cholesterol and cholesteryl esters, both of which are constituents of circulating lipoproteins.
Blood plasma of donors who had suffered various cardiovascular diseases (CVD) was analyzed with the help of shotgun lipidomics technology platform, and 203 lipids from 13 lipid classes were detected, identified, and quantified.
The concentration of lysophospatidylcholine and ratios of concentrations of cholesteryl esters to free cholesterol were lower in the CVD cohorts than in the control cohort, indicating a deficient conversion of cholesterol to cholesteryl esters in the blood plasma in the CVD patients.
