This annual banquet is a celebration of diversity and hospitality. It is intended to send a clear message: Saxony is open, inclusive, and proudly international.

Every year, people gather at a large row of hundreds of tables. This time, there were 271 tables, each one brimming with homemade dishes from around the world. People from all walks of life come together to share food, stories, and laughter in a joyful atmosphere of connection and cultural exchange. This year’s theme, “Sharing and Listening,” resonated strongly with Lipotype’s values. Science, integrity, quality, learning, service, and synergy shape how we work, collaborate, and grow our international community every day.

Lipotype’s table was a flavourful reflection of our team’s diversity and creativity, from Hungarian sausage with its bold aroma to crispy and spicy samosas that disappeared in minutes. There were feta-spinach pastries, rosemary focaccia, and a variety of homemade cakes, all of which disappeared almost as quickly as they arrived. Every dish had a story.

Of course, we didn’t just stay at our own table. We wandered, tasted, chatted, played games, and connected with people from other communities and companies. It was a reminder of how food can break down barriers and bring people together.

All in all, it was a joyful and inspiring experience that allowed us to share the message that our creativity, synergy, and growth are rooted in diversity. Especially in science, openness, collaboration, and teamwork are key. We are proud to stand alongside so many people celebrating a colourful and welcoming Dresden.

Prof. Dr. Kai Simons (born 1938) has made pioneering contributions to biochemistry and cell biology, focusing on the structure and function of cell membranes. His work has revolutionized our understanding of viral mechanisms, membrane organization, and lipid metabolism, with profound implications for public health.

Dr. Simons began his career in Helsinki, where he used the Semliki Forest Virus (SFV) as a model to study cell membranes. This virus, with its simple lipid bilayer and single spike protein, enabled him to elucidate how detergents solubilize membranes, a breakthrough that supported the development of efficient protein subunit vaccines. His team was the first to demonstrate how SFV enters host cells via clathrin-coated vesicles and escapes endosomes by triggering membrane fusion at low pH, a mechanism still relevant for understanding enveloped viruses like coronaviruses. He also showed how SFV assembles its envelope by selectively incorporating viral proteins, a discovery that influenced virology and cell biology.

At the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Dr. Simons shifted his focus to cell surface polarity and lipid sorting in epithelial cells, leading to the discovery of the lipid raft concept. Lipid rafts, dynamic microdomains enriched in sphingolipids and cholesterol, organize membrane bioactivity and play critical roles in signaling, trafficking, and disease processes. He linked lipid raft dysfunction to diseases such as Alzheimer’s and cancer, highlighting their potential as therapeutic targets. Dr. Simons also pioneered lipidomics, applying advanced mass spectrometry methods to study lipid diversity and function. His work identified lipid biomarkers for metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes, supporting early diagnosis and personalized interventions. These applications have filled a critical gap in public health by providing tools for targeted therapies.

Dr. Simons’ groundbreaking research continues to inspire innovations in vaccine development, diagnostics, and therapies, shaping modern biology and public health.

Simons is a member of numerous professional societies and academies, such as EMBO, the National Academy of Sciences (USA), and Academia Europaea. In 1999, he was elected to the Leopoldina. He has also been honored with numerous awards and medals, including the Leopoldina’s Schleiden Medal in 2001 and the Robert Koch Foundation’s Robert Koch Medal in Gold in 2016.

The Cothenius Medal dates back to a foundation established by Leopoldina member and personal physician to Prussian King Frederick II, Christian Andreas von Cothenius (1708–1789). It was awarded for the first time in 1792. Initially, the award winners were honored for their work on medical research issues. Since 1954, the Leopoldina has awarded the Cothenius Medals for

outstanding scientific lifetime achievement. As a rule, the awards are presented to members of the academy. Recipients include the physician and zoologist Ernst Haeckel (1864) and Konrad Zuse (1985), the developer of the first computer.

About the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina

As the national academy of sciences, the Leopoldina provides independent, science-based policy advice on socially relevant issues. For this purpose, the academy develops interdisciplinary statements based on scientific findings. These publications outline options for action, leaving the decision-making to democratically legitimized politicians. The experts who draft the statements work on a voluntary basis and are open to any outcome. The Leopoldina represents German science in international committees, including providing science-based advice to the annual G7 and G20 summits. It has around 1,700 members from more than 30 countries and brings together expertise from almost all areas of research. It was founded in 1652 and designated the National Academy of Sciences of Germany in 2008. As an independent science academy, the Leopoldina is committed to the common good.

JEONGEUN CHAE | HEAD OF MARKETING

Jeongeun joined Lipotype about four years ago as a content marketing assistant after completing her master’s degree in Regenerative Biology and Medicine at the Technical University of Dresden. Prior to her master’s, she earned bachelor’s degrees in both Biology and Business, reflecting her strong interest in combining scientific knowledge with commercial insight. Wanting to apply her biological background in a business setting, she joined the marketing team at Lipotype, which she was most ambitious about.

As the new Head of Marketing, Jeongeun will be responsible for leading the marketing team and playing a key role in strengthening Lipotype’s marketing strategy. She has already shown strong leadership and excellent problem-solving skills, along with a deep understanding of the industry. That is why we have no doubt she’ll do an outstanding job in this new role.

The importance of lipids in neuroscience is gaining increasing attention, particularly in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. As the field moves beyond a protein-centric view, researchers are beginning to explore how disruptions in lipid metabolism contribute to conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. To support this shift and encourage collaboration between neuroscience and lipidomics, we hosted a seminar titled “Lipidomics in Neurodegenerative Disease Research.” The event highlighted the critical need to integrate lipidomic analysis into neurodegenerative disease research and underscored the potential of lipid-focused approaches to uncover new mechanisms and therapeutic targets. 

We featured high-level talks from speakers and scientists with over a decade of experience in lipid research within the scope of neuroscience, focusing on the application of lipidomics in basic and clinical research presented by Dr. Rebecca Pinals, Dr. Silke Nuber and Dr. Saranna Fanning. 

The seminar attendees appreciated how engaging the discussions were, with all the talks sparking lively debates that captivated principal investigators. After the talks, they enjoyed the networking sessions, where they exchanged ideas and built connections over cold drinks. The engaging discussions and networking sessions kept people around well into the evening, making it a memorable experience for everyone. To top off the day, some people even enjoyed a unique highlight: the real Lipotype raft, which offered a refreshing dip in the Charles River to beat the summer heat.

This event will cover the application of lipidomics in both basic and clinical research. In addition to the scientific presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in relevant discussions and network with fellow researchers over drinks and light refreshments. The event aims to foster a dynamic exchange of ideas and spark new collaborations in the neuroscience and lipidomics communities.

The speaker lineup includes Dr. Rebecca Pinals, a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Picower Institute, who will present “Targeting Lipid Metabolism for Parkinson’s Disease Therapeutics.” Dr. Silke Nuber, Instructor in Neurology and Principal Investigator at Brigham and Women’s Neurology, will speak on “Alzheimer’s Disease Risk Triad Drives Perturbations in the Global Lipid Economy of the Brain.” In addition, another speaker (TBA) will present a talk titled “Stearoyl-CoA Desaturase Inhibition Prevents Multiple Parkinson Disease Phenotypes in Mice.”

The seminar will take place on Monday, June 23, 2025, at the Cambridge Innovation Center, 5th floor, One Broadway, Cambridge, MA 02142. The scientific program will run from 15:00 to 17:00, followed by networking and lipid rafting from 17:00 onward. And yes, by “lipid rafting,” we’re having a bit of fun with the scientific term. But we also mean actual rafting – in the Charles River! We’ll have a raft ready at the event, so feel free to hop on and enjoy a ride if you want, of course. ;)

Lipotype proudly announces the appointment of Ines as the new Head of Finance.

INES KÄSTNER | HEAD OF FINANCE

Ines Kästner has been a vital part of Lipotype since March 2013, bringing her extensive expertise in finance and business administration. Her commitment and skill have been evident from the start.

Promoted to Head of Finance, Ines will now be responsible for shaping global financial strategies, collaborating with partners, and overseeing financial planning. She will focus on developing revenue-driven financial initiatives and leading the finance team with clear goals and a collaborative culture.

Ines holds a Diploma in Business Administration and an MBA from Henley Business School. She has previously served as the Head of Finance and CEO of JADO Technologies GmbH, as well as Head of Administration at B CUBE, TU Dresden.

Expressing her gratitude for the promotion, Ines remarked, “The trust and opportunity provided by the Lipotype team mean a lot to me. I am eager to expand my skills and knowledge through daily interactions with my colleagues and stakeholders.
