On April 21 and 22, 2026, the German and European biotechnology industry came together for the German Biotech Days (DBT 2026) in Leipzig, Germany.
Lipotype took part in DBT 2026 both on the exhibition floor and in the conference programme. Dr. Olya Vvedenskaya (Senior Communications Manager), and Tereza Polášková (Events and Logistics Coordinator) engaged with participants at the Lipotype booth, while Dr. Oliver Uecke (CEO of Lipotype Inc. and COO of Lipotype GmbH) gave a talk on how lipidomics enables metabolic precision medicine.
Organised by BIO Deutschland e.V. and the BioRegions Working Group, with biosaxony e.V. as regional host, DBT 2026 offered an open setting for discussion across disciplines and sectors. For Lipotype, this meant strengthening existing collaborations and exploring new projects in biomedical research and drug development.
Lipidomics as a Driver of Precision Medicine
Dr. Oliver Uecke gave a talk during the symposium on “Metabolic Profiling as Driver for Precision Medicine.” Metabolic profiling examines small molecules generated through cellular metabolism, offering a direct snapshot of biochemical activity at the molecular level.
In his talk, “Lipidomics powers metabolic precision medicine,” he showed how lipidomic profiling provides robust, biologically relevant insights into disease-related metabolic states. With a strong focus on application, his presentation illustrated how lipidomics helps identify metabolic signatures, supports risk stratification, and informs the development of targeted therapies. The discussion that followed reflected growing interest in combining metabolic profiling with advanced data analysis. These approaches help translate complex biological measurements into insights that can be used in practice.
Direct Exchange at Booth G10
Throughout both conference days, Lipotype was present at booth G10. Dr. Olya Vvedenskaya and Tereza Polášková met with conference participants to discuss how quantitative lipidomics can be applied across different stages of research, from early discovery to translational medicine projects. A recurring topic was how lipid data complements other omics layers and supports biomarker discovery and decision-making in drug development. These conversations reflected a broader trend: lipidomics is no longer seen as a niche method, but as an established part of modern bioanalytics.
Strong Political Signals and Regional Commitment
DBT 2026 opened with clear political backing for biotechnology. Keynotes by Dorothee Bär, Federal Minister for Research, Technology, and Space, and Roland Sackers, Chairman of BIO Deutschland e.V., highlighted the role of biotechnology at the national level. In addition to his role at Lipotype, Dr. Oliver Uecke took part in the opening session as Chairman of the Board of biosaxony e.V.
The regional perspective was equally strong. Clemens Schülke, Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs of the City of Leipzig, outlined the city’s ambition to further develop its life sciences ecosystem. On the second day, Saxony’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Dirk Panter, reaffirmed biotechnology’s long-term importance for the Free State. He pointed to Saxony’s biotech initiative launched in 2000 as a basis for growth, jobs, and competitiveness.
For Lipotype, this matters in very practical terms: stable research infrastructure, strong networks, and long-term policy support are what make it possible to move lipidomics from the lab into applied research and clinical settings.
Comments on the Event
Looking back on the event, Dr. Oliver Uecke spoke about the significance of Saxony for the biotech industry and research:
“Leipzig and Saxony stand for a dynamic and innovative biotech and life sciences ecosystem. The return of the German Biotech Days to Leipzig after ten years underscores the region’s strength. It is built on the close integration of research and industry, supported by excellent institutions such as TU Dresden, a University of Excellence, the University of Leipzig, Fraunhofer and Max Planck Institutes, high-performance infrastructures like BIO CITY Leipzig, and a growing number of successful spin-offs.”
He also pointed to the importance of long-term political initiatives, particularly the Free State of Saxony’s Biotech Offensive, in strengthening the region’s profile and international visibility.
Conclusion
For Lipotype, DBT 2026 offered an opportunity to show how quantitative lipidomics supports precision medicine and to connect with partners across translational research and biotechnology. Drawing on decades of research experience, Lipotype develops mass spectrometry–based lipidomics to study thousands of lipids across a wide range of sample types. This work helps researchers better understand metabolic processes linked to health and disease.
