How should dried blood spot samples be stored for lipidomics analysis?
DBS samples should be dried at room temperature and then stored frozen, ideally at -80°C, until analysis. While immediate cooling is not required at the moment of collection, cold storage is necessary to preserve lipid integrity prior to analysis.

What are the advantages of DBS sampling over plasma for lipidomics studies?
DBS sampling requires only a finger prick, with no phlebotomy and no anticoagulants. This makes it ideal for decentralised clinical trials, longitudinal studies with frequent sampling, and large-cohort research where participant burden and logistics need to be minimised.

What is dried blood spot lipidomics?
Dried blood spot (DBS) lipidomics is the quantitative analysis of lipids from a small blood sample collected via finger prick onto a filter card. Unlike plasma lipidomics, DBS captures the full whole-blood lipidome, including lipid classes from blood cell membranes and mitochondria.
